New Hanover County schools is slated to receive more than $1.5 million in North Carolina lottery funding for school construction projects. The acceptance of the money is currently pending county commissioner approval, which is on the agenda for their Monday, October 19 meeting.
New Hanover County and the Board of Education have stated the money would go toward the following projects:
- Wrightsboro Elementary School- $54,000 for floor replacement and repair
- Laney High School- $605, 000 for painting and restroom renovations
- Eaton Elementary School- $72,000 to replace 16-year-old carpet with vinyl tiles
- Codington Elementary Schools- $72,000 to replace 16-year-old carpet with vinyl tiles
- Bradley Creek Elementary- $56,000 to replace two heat exchangers with gas-fired water heaters
- Bellamy Elementary- $120,000 for painting along with adding a right turn lane on to Saunders Road
- Williams Elementary- $45,000 for a new service ramp and canopy for the back door and kitchen area
- Murray Middle- $40,000 additional lane for traffic exiting the school site
- Sidbury Road improvements- $473,000
According to county officials, the Sidbury Road site, formerly The Rock Church, was purchased by the school system in 2014, and will be used as a swing site during the College Park Elementary School replacement and as a future middle school site. The lottery funding will be used for road improvements to handle future traffic at the site.
In a release from the New Hanover County Board of Education, capital construction needs were identified and considered during the current capital budget process. The budget was approved by the Board of Education on August, 4, 2015 and included these projects to be funded through the county’s Public School Building Capital fund and the North Carolina Educational Lottery.
According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, New Hanover County has received more than $58,888,138 in lottery funds since inception of the lottery in March 2006. Last year, New Hanover County received a total of $8,647,354 with about $1.7 million in funding for construction projects.
